TORTUGA How easily his feet carried him back to the place that brought on a montage of memories.
Carefully, the ivory brute picked his way down the path that lead to the pool of crystal water gathered below. Not far behind and above him was the waterfall, roaring openly to the world as it crashed down, splashing upwards where it met the surface of the water. His paws thudded lightly against the dirt beneath them, his pace not quite slow, but not rushed, either. He was in no hurry to get to the bottom of the path. Perhaps he should have been worried about hurrying back to Irrsin, but he knew that the pack was in capable paws. Between his stunning mate, Kasimira, and the talkative yet bold Beta, Kyren, he was sure that Irrsin would last a few hours without him prowling around. A few months ago, he would have been loathe to leave his pups, but they had grown so very much now. They could handle themselves.
The fact was, things had been so quiet in Irrsin lately. Tortuga had found that there was very little to do, aside from patrol and participate in the occasional meeting. Each pack member tended to keep to themselves, and that was fine. But one morning, Tortuga had awoken and found that he was aching to see something more than the lush meadows. Not that he grew tired of Irrsin. On the contrary, he quite enjoyed it. It was his home, and the only place he found that he belonged. Yet a brief change of scenery was in order, and Tortuga had known just the perfect place. That was how he had come to find himself trotting down the worn path, the sun beaming down, warming his white fur.
Finally, Tortuga reached the bottom of the path, which curved around and flattened out. He paused, glancing at the gorgeous scenery. From the moss covered rocks that peaked out from behind the flowing falls, to the vivid green grass that dotted the muddy shore of the pool, it was gorgeous. The sun's rays reflected off of the water, and Tortuga found himself relaxing as he strolled forward, glancing around. Aside from the occasional bird that swooped overhead, he was alone.
As he waded into the pool, which proved to be quite chilly, he was consumed by images of he and Kasimira, passionately rolling in the grass at his back. His lips pulled upwards into a half-smile as he stopped, the water reaching up to mid-foreleg. He dipped his head down, his chin lightly resting on the surface of the clear pool as he stared down at his own reflection. Cerulean eyes met their matches as he stared himself down, his heart beating softly in his great chest. Really, he thought. Who was he?
Well, to start, he was one of the Alphas of Irrsin, ruling beside his wonderful Queen, Kasimira. He had a large pack, the largest in the area, he believed, and a trio of regal pups who were growing into fine wolves. But those things...those were what he was, not who, and his mind tried to wrap itself around the thought of his being. Every time he thought he had a clear opinion on the matter, however, it slipped away from his grasp, and slippery as an eel. For some time, Tortuga had wondered what made him...well, himself. He was so very satisfied with life, but could he ever truly be fully fulfilled without knowing himself, inside and out?

KASIMIRA The call of the falls had not left her. Spiriting through the trees with her tail streaming behind, Kasimira plunged through the bracken as she moved, undaunted by the barriers. She huffed to clear a downed tree, her legs working in overtime. It was all she could do to keep moving, racing, feeling. The time had grown long and uneventful for the queen, her home a comfort and a restraint. Where had the days gone when she had been a roaming dominor with no land of her own and only unrestricted freedoms at her paws? Kasimira grunted exhaustion as she skirted some bushes, her mind as fleeting as her legs.
It wasn't that she was unhappy with pack life. Not by any means. Tortuga was a lovely mate, radiant in the early mornings and seductively pleasurable when dusk came knocking. Besides that, her pups were growing up to be strong, proud wolves. They were her beautiful, beautiful children and she cherished them in her own, motherly way. It pained her to see them training with Tortuga and Kyren during the day, with the brutality they learned and practiced. It all looked so real and natural for them. Kasimira herself was a born fighter--that much way plainly clear--but she wasn't quite ready for her children to exhibit such talents so quickly. Sometimes the queen excused herself from such events, during which time she retreated to the Alpha's den, allowing herself to sleep off her worries and hope in vain that when she awoke the trio would be newborns again, their eyes not yet open and their mouths squealing in protest for their black-coated mother.
It was with this same fear and anxiety that she used to fuel herself through the woods, her pace increased significantly. Her breathing was ragged and wavering but she didn't dare stop, her mind commanding her onward as it overrode her need for rest and a slower, more manageable pace. Kasimira thrummed mindlessly on through the gorse without pause, the world as blur as she moved. This was invigorating, this power and indulgence. Pushing herself on, Kasimira caught the tell-tale floods of the falls and angled herself towards them. Rushing and racing towards them. Half hoping something there could pacify her raging temperament, if only for a short while.
Hastily, she cut corners towards her destination, the gait slowing if only slightly. The frenzy of losing her pups to another pack or outside dominor still burned within her and she pursued an invisible adversary with flaring hostilities. As she drew herself around the next bramble, a pallid white coat came into view. What the--? The male's scent hit her before clear recognition kicked in, and Kasimira slid to a halting stop, her breathing just as uneven and huffed as before.
"Tortuga?"
Surprise lit her brows as she stared across the clearing. What was he doing here? Her mate had been the last wolf she'd expected to find splashing around in the shallow pool, and yet something about him took the breath from her body more quickly than her berserk race had. Kasimira wasn't sure how to react at first, her fur raised in a mixture of excitement and disappointment. She'd come here to escape the containment of pack life, and yet she'd gotten no further away from it than before leaving. Personally, she'd hoped to quietly cry her own sadness away but now that was impossible.
It wasn't that she minded showing weakness in front of her mate, the black female just preferred not to. As of recent she'd felt horribly quiet and reserved, her usual fire burnt out by the worries over her now adolescent litter. Heck, she didn't even expect Tortuga to understand her thought process if she'd attempted to explain. There were parts she didn't even understand, and besides, maybe it was just normal material instinct to worry about these things.
Some part of the young mother wished desperately to be able to curl up besides her mate and gush the heartache she felt so deeply. But the lion inside her roared and instead she picked up the conversation rather roughly, her voice disdainful at the least.
"I hadn't expected to find you here."
The cold blue eyes were almost glaring as she spoke, and Kasimira regretted the words immediately. But she'd said them and arrogantly she held her ground, the emotions shattering invisibly before her.

TORTUGA "Tortuga?"
The voice that tore the brute's attention away from his reflection was so very familiar. Before he had even fully turned towards her, Tortuga's heart was pounding, surprise flickering in his eyes as he took in the sight of her. Kasimira stood on the shore, looking as stunned as he felt, her black pelt beautiful in the sun. Almost immediately, Tortuga's entire form turned towards her, his feelings shifting from surprised to joyous as he took in the sight of her. So gorgeous, but had he truly expected anything else from her? She would always be the most beautiful, fierce creature that he had ever laid his eyes on.
"I hadn't expected to find you here."
Her voice was harsh, and immediately Tortuga felt the smile that had been forming slipping from his muzzle. A mixture of emotions rushed through him; surprise, agitation, anger, confusion, and hurt. The last one he worked the hardest to conceal, making his face a blank mask as he moved from the water, shaking the water from his pelt. Then, slowly, he approached her. At first, he stopped a fair distance from her, tilting his head to one side. His eyes did not hold their usual amused glimmer as he looked at her. Was she angry with him? Perhaps she wanted to be alone? He was unsure.
"I'm not entirely sure I expected to find myself here," he said lightly. "I intended on a simple walk, and I found myself here."
Then, staring harder at her, as if trying to figure something out, he moved forward. He stopped inches away from her, longing to touch her but wondering if she would welcome it, or push him away. He stood close enough that if she wanted to, she could lean into him, but far enough away that she did not have to make contact with him, either. His eyes searched her face, his expression complex, as if he were trying to figure out a complex problem. Then, forcing himself to partially smile, he lowered his voice so that he was mumbling, his words for her and her alone.
"Why so cold, my Queen?"
His voice was light still, teasing. Then, realizing that she might believe he was making fun of her, he continued on, his voice now serious and concerned.
"Are you alright?"
He made his concern obvious in his eyes as he looked at her. Over the time that he had known Kasimira, and since she had taken him as her mate, he had come to care deeply for her. Their relationship was passionate, and full of love, or so he had thought. For a brief moment he wondered if she was losing her feelings for him; perhaps Kasimira was not the type to remain with one brute for long periods of time. But then, he told himself that he was being silly. She had carried his pups. It was not if she would just toss him away after something like that. Would she?

KASIMIRA Tortuga's response was everything she expected it to be. Her mate almost immediately flushed a hasty surprise, littered with hints of irritability at her abruptness, her hostility. Kasimira stood still as the two blinked soundlessly at each other, her blue eyes glittering a concealed mixture of distress and outrage. What was there to say? She'd come to the falls for the peace and relaxation solitude would hopefully bring her. And now she had to deal with this.
"I'm not entirely sure I expected to find myself here, I intended on a simple walk, and I found myself here."
His voice, light and airy, only drew out a snarl from the black vixen. Kasimira rolled her eyes, a previous scene flashing before her without hesitation. From the fall's mist rose a figure, feminine in build, and yet much smaller than the Irrsin queen's own. Readily identifiable, the form grew and shaped itself further with pale, white fur, flawless, blinking amber eyes. It was Adali's wispy frame that stood sidled against Tortuga, the sklavin's scent wreathing around him. Kasimira quickly shook her mind, scattered the hallucination. But the damage had been done, the matches lit. The fire had been given kindling.
"Why so cold, my Queen?"
Tortuga gently, slowly moved closer, his paw steps deliberate, methodical. It was apparent he was trying not to upset her. Kasimira watched with a strange quiet, not answering his question nor grinning to reassure him, as she normally would have done. She was stolid in all aspects, the muscles firm in stance, her mind wavering between how to react. If she responded quickly and with enough enthusiasm, she could win back his affections easily, with at least some modest cuddling thrown in. At best, and if she flaunted herself as he liked, she would come away with some lust out of him for the night.
The things that normally would have pacified the queen, held no passion in her tonight. Kasimira ignored the impulse to race to his side, hesitantly allowed the possibility of making up slip from her grasp. She didn't want that tonight. Those things were, in some sense, vain; they would satisfy her for now, but in the morning she would be left as empty and as vulnerable before and without a real answer to her troubles. What do you want? The queen inwardly murmured the question as she stared bluntly at her mate, the previous emotion draining from her as the silence lapsed.
Although teasing, his voice had hit a nerve and Kasimira was forced to deal with the situation on hand. Should she take his embrace and admit her feelings, her worries? Then again, it had always been the safer route to deny all chance of affliction. She didn't want anyone to sit and dissect her feelings, to tell her that what she felt was normal. When compared to other she-wolves, with her motherly instincts and helplessness when it came to her pups' growing up, she would be seen as weak, as one with them. In a distant sense, she would lose her title, her stature as sole pack Alpha. It was true that Tortuga led alongside her, but in reality, the pack knew who dictated and who approved the decisions. If she was reduced to something less than her absolute, the one thing she had worked for... That alone was a thing her pride dared not put at risk.
Apprehensively, as if in a dream, she pulled her muzzle away from Tortuga's approach, lips bared as she narrowed her eyes. There was a reason she'd never shared her thoughts on how their pups were doing, why she never agreed with him when he commented on how strong, how passionate they were. Tortuga had told her countless times how Marzell's fighting spirit or Adelina's coy remarks so closely resembled her own. In the moment she'd smiled the same, nodded her head as if to acknowledge his commentary. Inside, she'd shied from the facts, tucking the sweet, melancholy remarks deep within her. And now, when given the option of allowing Tortuga to explore her sentiments, her memories, she refused.
"Are you alright?"
Where as before Tortuga's voice had been teasing and easygoing, the white male now took a much more serious tone, his eyes flickering a question. Are you alright? It repeated itself in her head and Kasimira turned away from her mate completely. What could she say that would explain her feelings simply? She didn't want to talk about it. Well, maybe at one point she had. Not anymore. The grief was too real, too close for her to examine without harm. The wounds were too fresh; they stung to the touch, screamed at poured water. No, she would deal with this alone.
"I'm fine."
Without turning around. Kasimira narrowed her eyes decisively at the trees above them before moving away, flicking her black ears in dismissal. Her selection was final. However much her heart needed the emotional catharsis that a midnight talk with her mate would bring, Kasimira aggressively denied it. She would not been seen as a delicate, soft-hearted female. She plodded slowly over to the pool's edge, her pink tongue slipping out for a quick drink. The water was cool on her lips as she considered her moves. Tortuga would probably demand an explanation. She needed to intercept him before he had the ability to pin her thoughts down, before he could piece the puzzle together himself.
"So what were you doing out here?"
Kasimira shot the white male a questioning face, her tone sober and contemplative as she allowed herself to slowly look him over. She knew he hadn't been doing or planning anything criminal tonight--that much was clear by his obvious sincerity and unruffled fur. But she was insistent on covering herself. She'd shared a portion of her feelings with him before, and although it had been liberating, Kasimira had felt like she'd lost some of herself in that talk. This sudden interest in his whereabouts would keep herself from having to deal with Tortuga's natural curiosity. Instead of interrogating her, he'd be preoccupied with trying to explain himself to an agitated she-wolf.
At least until he figured out what she was doing.

TORTUGA "I'm fine."
Emotions swirled inside of him, and a pressure built in his chest. He stared at her for a long moment, watching as she moved to the waters edge. His blue eyes narrowed, and for a long moment, he was silent, even when she asked him what he was doing here. He said nothing, simply staring up at the sky, blue eyes twinkling, shifting, reflecting his emotions that raged inside of him. Whatever he did, he could not let her see his eyes, for there she would see hurt and confusion. And it would not do well for Tortuga to seem hurt. He could not appear weak and vulnerable, as he used to be when he was small and defenseless, an attachment to his mother's side. She had cared deeply for him, and he had loved to watch her lay beneath the moonlight, voice soft as she whispered lost stories, her ivory fur almost glimmering in the light.
Ivory fur.
His thoughts were taken suddenly to Adali, the pretty white she-wolf who he'd snatched up at Auktion Rock. Ever since he had taken her back to Irrsin, things had been...off between he and Kasimira. He wondered, briefly, if she was jealous, and Tortgua's lips twitched upwards slightly. Kasimira, jealous? Sure, Adali was nice-looking, likely similar to a Goddess beneath the moonlight, but Kasimira was stunning - and more. Adali, when he looked at her, made his thoughts travel back to his mother, his siblings, his pack...and because of that, because of the fond memories that Adali evoked, he was fond of the Sklavin. He enjoyed watching her as she submissively slunk from the dens, but never could Kasimira see him, for she would take his gaze to mean something else entirely. She would likely throw a fit, and he would have to console her. Yet, lately, that did not seem to be working. She was distant, cold almost, and Tortuga found himself hardening slightly. He would not sit back and lick the wounds that her frigid behavior enflicted. He would lift his head proudly, and she would not know that he was aching inside.
"Remembering," he finally said in response to her question. His words should have been warm, tinged with passion and a whisper of seduction. But instead, they were distant, detatched, and he wandered away from the water, away from her, his eyes still on the sky as if he were looking for the answers there. How did he solve the complex puzzle that was Kasimira? Would being cold in return only push her farther from him? Perhaps, but he could not imagine himself siddling up to her, begging for her attention. Tortuga was no common dog; he did not beg and plead, hoping for a scrap of affection to be thrown in his direction.
He snorted softly to himself before going on to elaborate. "I suppose I've been wanting to return here for quite some time. I saw it only once, under the moonlight with you, but never have I seen it when the sun warmed the water."
He turned back to her then, although she was not looking at him. What was it that bothered her? Her stared hard at her back, his gaze intense, as if this would give him a hint, or some sort of sign. Females were difficult, but Kasimira was even moreso. He knew was she was like, and he assumed it was her stubborn pride holding her back from spilling her heart before him. He knew that it would not always be easy and passionate when he was with her, and suddenly he was ashamed for being cold to her. What if she was hurting, and he was inflicting her more pain? What kind of mate was he to turn away from her so arrogantly, as if she were nothing more than a toy to him?
He moved near her again, but still he kept his distance, not drawing too close as he watched her. "And what brings you here?" He asked, his voice light, the cold undertone gone from it. Still he sounded slightly detatched, and Tortuga wondered if this gave away how he truly feared. Shaking himself, he straightened, reminding himself over and over that he could not look weak. He had to be strong for her, when she could not be.
